We did a yoga workshop for plus-size practitioners—Here’s what we learned!

Updated: Dec 1

Recently, I fulfilled a long term dream of hosting Kurvy Foundations, a yoga workshop for plus-size beginners! The experience was full of insights, movement, and self-discovery.

Here’s a summary of the lessons we took away that reinforce how yoga can truly be for every body:

1. Yoga is for Every Body. Period.

One of the most important lessons we embraced was that yoga is accessible to everyone, no matter their size, shape, or flexibility level. Our bodies are all capable of amazing things, and every step in the journey deserves grace and respect. Wherever you are on your path, remember that your body is enough, just as it is.

2. Modifications Are Key—And Props Are Your Best Friend

We learned that if something doesn’t feel right in your body, modifying the pose is completely fine. Props like blocks, straps, and bolsters can help us find comfort and connection. Yoga is about tuning into your body and creating a practice that works for you—not following a rigid script. The goal is to deepen your connection to yourself and prepare for meditation in a way that feels natural.

3. Transitions Are Opportunities for Exploration

Moving from one pose to the next is an important part of yoga, and we explored different ways to get to the front of the mat. Whether you choose to step, walk, or jump, there’s joy in finding the movements that feel right for you. Transitions aren’t just functional; they’re a chance to be creative and playful as you move.

4. It’s Okay to Stumble – Just Get Back Up

Mistakes happen—even to the instructor! While demonstrating how to use blocks for Half Moon Pose, I lost my balance and fell. Was it embarrassing? Sure, for a moment. But the important lesson here is that it’s perfectly fine to stumble as long as you get back up and try again. Falling, wobbling or shaking is part of the process, and in yoga (and in life), persistence matters more than perfection.

5. Confidence is Built by Loving Ourselves as We Are

Confidence doesn’t come overnight. It’s a journey of meeting ourselves where we are and celebrating small victories along the way. Loving yourself completely can take time, and it’s okay to start small. Each little win builds up, adding to a foundation of self-assurance that can transform the way we see ourselves.

Wrapping Up

Kurvy Foundations taught us that yoga is so much more than just poses. It’s a practice of connecting to ourselves, adapting to our needs, and finding joy in the journey.

Whether you’re new to yoga or rediscovering it, remember: you’re doing amazing just by showing up and listening to your body. Here’s to embracing our practice with love, resilience, and a sense of adventure!

All my love,

Kristina
